  i've seen a few threads/posts where some of y'all have heard from jw contacts and how they've stepped up their 'the end is close' rhetoric because of the earthquake/tsunami in japan.

  i usually take those things with a grain of salt.

  there's always some jw whose cheese has slipped that reads prophecy into every little thing that happens.

  here's how the iodine pills work:

  >IF< you are deficient in iodine, the iodine pills provide the amount of iodine your body (thyroid gland) needs of stable iodine 127 so that when you are exposed to radioactive iodine 131 your body will not absorb it but will pass it out in your urine.

  the half life of radioactive iodine 131 is about 8 days. In the process of decaying to form the inert element Xenon (a gas) , iodine 131 releases beta and gamma particles, which can cause mutation or death of cells up to two millimeters away from the source atom. I would take a daily dose each day that the exposure lasts, and for at least a week afterward. During this time, also be sure to keep yourself well hydrated to facilitate the elimination of excess iodine via the urine.

  That's an important thing to remember because it tells us two things:

  1. There is no "logic" about who ends up sufferring in such circumstances. All men are pretty much on equal terms with mag 9 earthquakes. Mag 9 earthquakes do not discriminate.

  2. There will be no "divine salvation" for "chosen ones." If you survive, you're LUCKY, plain and simple. No hand of god shields His Chosen Ones from Mag 9 earthquakes.

  This applies to all other natural disaster of terrestrial or cosmic origin. We look at the universe, and it looks back at us with the cold, unfeeling eye of a shark.

  Hákarl is a feel-good food, if the alternative is being a starving viking.

  Hákarl or kæstur hákarl (Icelandic for "fermented shark") is a food from Iceland. It is a Greenland or basking shark which has been cured with a particular fermentation process and hung to dry for four to five months. Hákarl is an acquired taste and has a very particular ammonia-rich smell and fishy taste, similar to very strong cheese slathered in ammonia.

  ARMAGEDDON is the Watchtower boogeyman who will come to get you if you aren't good. But he's not real. He's the Bible-based™ version of Freddy Kruger, who can give you bad dreams but have no effect whatsoever on your reality, unless you let him.

  There is no Freddy Kruger.

  There is no Michael Meyers.

  There is no Armageddon.

  Candyman, candyman, candyman.

  but our situation is very difficult and quite high profile.... i was raised as a jw and my mother was very strict and abusive.

  i got baptized at age 14.. my mother actually called on my (present) husband's mom in service.

  she was on the initial call resulting in his mom coming in the truth and him being raised in it from about age 8 or 9.. despite a very abusive step-father, he followed his mom's lead and came into the truth.

  I find it interesting that you said, "I approached my own elders and told them the situation. They dealt swiftly and disfellowshipped both of us."

  Let's see if I got this right, YOUR elders disfellowshipped a person from another congregation? Is that so?

  Regarding Fritz Spriingmeier and his book, "THE WATCHTOWER & THE MASONS" -- first off, the sub-title of the book is worthy of note: it is "A preliminary investigation." So it seems that even Fritz was open to consideration of other FACTS, perhaps.

  Secondly, who is Fritz Springmeier? What are his sources? Since he didn't know CTR personally, where did he get his information?
